A WHOLE NEW MEANING TO LEGENDARY STORAGE (LIFT)

As I walked into the large and unassuming, storage building I braced myself for what I might see. He told me to “hang on while I get the lights “ …. and as I stood there I could make out the shapes of what I knew would be an amazing collection.

The lights came on and there stood a row of the Eagle 4-post storage lifts with some historic and monumental race cars stored on them. Some gathered thick layers of dust while others were respectfully covered. This storage building held amazing treasures of the past.
IMG_6547The man who became “The King” has been in racing for over 50 years. His daddy was a NASCAR driver. These treasures were more than cars… they told his story, and the stories of his son and grandson. That’s why they are kept, and stored with care.

IMG_6539The weight of the history that stood around me suddenly hit me, and goosebumps rose up. I almost forgot that I was there to get photos of the Eagle storage lifts. There were cars that Richard Petty drove, including his last win at Daytona. There was the car the Kyle Petty drove when he was at Wood Brothers Racing. There were even Adam Petty’s cars that were considerately covered. The legend that is the Petty family is not only in racing or in North Carolina, but in their life are abundant. They make you feel truly special and want you to take a part in their history.

If you want to experience it too, you should visit the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman, NC. To have been able to be a part of this special space with the Eagle brand is an experience that is truly unexplainable. What will you store on your Eagle lift? I bet it’ll be legendary. IMG_6555

Moving Your Eagle 4-Post Storage Lift

I received an email from one of our customers who purchased an Eagle 7k four-post storage lift a few years back. He needed to move this lift closer to the front of his garage, about 3′. All Eagle 4-post storage lifts that range from 6k to 8k capacity have the ability to be moved because they are not anchored to the floor.

Our current storage lift models include a set of casters, but the older models do not. The casters hook to each post and allow the user to move the lift freely about his shop, as needed. The lift would lower and cause the forks on each caster to raise each post off the ground 1”-2”. See diagram below.

4-post lift move diagram
Customers who have the older models do have the option of purchasing casters from our parts department. If the lift is going to be moved frequently, then this is what we suggest. This buyer did not have the caster set, and really did not want to purchase a new set for $299 just to move the lift 3′, understandably. It was time for us to do some brainstorming together to solve this problem.

After thinking about how to make this work without the casters, I came up with 2 viable solutions for him to consider. Both solutions are only for short moves within your shop.

The first solution was to use a couple of floor jacks and some wood wedges. The user would need to lower the lift until it rested on top of the floor jacks. Once the lift is on the jacks, you would then need to put the wood wedges inside each post, on top of the cross member. These wedges would not allow the cross member to raise up when you begin to raise each jack.  Once the lift is off the ground just enough for the lift to roll on the jacks, you begin to push the lift in the direction you wish the lift to go.

The 2nd solution requires a couple ratchet straps and 2 floor jacks. You would first lower the lift down onto the jacks, same as the first solution. Now with the ratchet straps, you would secure them from post to post sideways and on top of each cross member at the post. Once you tighten the straps, it will put the pressure needed on each cross member and not allow it to move once the jacks begin to rise. At this point you would raise the jacks until each post is off the ground enough to move the lift the short distance you need.

We recommend that if you are going to try and move your lift, that you do so carefully and safely.

I relayed both ideas to the customer and allowed him to make the decision which best suited him. This is what I heard back:

I wanted to thank you for your advice and counsel regarding moving my SS7000.  I really appreciate Eagle’s customer focus.

Last night, a friend and I moved the lift forward 3’ and toward the garage door 6” with two floor jacks.  The move took 5-7 minutes.

Figuring out how to lock the cross rail to the posts, so we could lift the entire assembly, took us about 20 minutes planning time.  We wedged the post and side rail assembly with wooden wedges.  Once the two were locked together, we lifted the entire assembly about 1”, as you suggested, and carefully pulled the lift forward and to the side slightly in gentle bursts.  I have attached the “after” photo of our successful move.

Thanks, once again, for being supportive and helpful.  Let me know what I can do to support Eagles’ business.

Sincerely,
Sean J. Rogers, Esq.

fourpost lift move

We’re so glad that we were able to assist in this “move”. This turned out great for the user and his desire to move his lift just a short distance. These applications are safe and easy to perform, but I would still recommend investing in the set of casters for any type of move. But remember, if you purchase our current 4-post storage lift models, the casters are included with every purchase … making these moves easy!

The Styles of Mobile Car Lifts

When it comes to automotive lifts, the one misconception is that all lifts need to be bolted to the floor. That statement is correct for all 2-post lifts and most of the four-post lifts you encounter. There are some mobile car lifts from Eagle that do not have to be fixed to the floor but offer the ability of the end user to lift their vehicles: the PMR-6000-48 mid-rise scissor lift, the MS-8000 series 4-post storage/service lift and the MOBILEMAN® single-post mobile car lift. Let me tell you a bit about each style.

PMR-6000-1PMR-6000-48: MID-RISE SCISSOR LIFT
Primary use – Auto repair shops, body shops and residential use

The Mid-Rise Scissor Lift is a mobile car lift that has been a part of Eagle’s equipment line for nearly 20 years. It is a 6,000 lb. capacity, scissor-style lift, with a 48” rise and can go up to 54″ with the height adapters (that come free). Starting at 12”, there is a locking position every 4 inches. To load, it sits flat on the floor, and you drive the vehicle over the top of the lift. Each arm is adjustable, which allows you to move them to the correct load points for specific vehicles.

The twin hydraulic cylinders and scissor lift design give this lift extreme strength and solid stability. One end of the scissor design has two steel rollers attached to each end of the scissor. These roll during the lifting process, allowing the lift to rise. The steel rollers also work with moving the lift around. The lift comes with a dolly that picks up from one end of the lift, opposite of the steel rollers, and lets you push or pull the lift around your shop or garage. On the opposite side of the scissor, there is a 3″ diameter steel rod that sits still during the lifting process. This steel rod is the anchor that steadies the lift during the lifting process.

When the vehicle is loaded on the lift, most of the vehicle’s underside is not accessible because of the design of the lift. This lift is best suited for tire and brake service, bodywork, and light auto repair.

GLO-8000XLT 2MS-8000 SERIES 4-POST STORAGE & SERVICE LIFT
Primary Use – Residential homeowners, car enthusiasts and automotive repair

By far one of our most popular lifts, mainly sold to the residential and non-commercial market. It can be used in most commercial applications as well.

This lift is a cable-over-hydraulic system and operates with a 110-volt or 220-volt power unit. This lift allows the end user to bolt the lift to the floor if they wish, but is also designed to be free standing.

With two different sizes to choose from, this four-post lift can fit your need:

The MS-8000 is our standard version. It is 168″ long and rises to 72″. It has 10 different locking positions.

GLO-8000The MS-8000XLT is our “extra” version of the same lift. “Extra Long” at 185″ long and “Extra” rise up to 82″.  It also has an “extra” 2 locking positions, for a total of 12.

This lift is offset on the base plates, which allows the plates to each maximize their load and stabilize the lift, without being bolted to the floor. If you need to move the lift and use a little more of your floor space, a caster kit is included with the purchase, allowing you to do this. Simply attach one caster assembly to each post and lower the lift. The weight of the lift will start the caster kit system and pick up each post onto the wheel itself. One person can move the lift once it is securely on the casters. Also included with the purchase are 3 drip trays, 1 jack tray and a set of aluminum drive-on ramps. This is lift is best designed for storing 2 vehicles and/or automotive repair.

Mobileman side shotThe MOBILEMAN® SINGLE POST PORTABLE LIFT
Primary users – Automotive repair shops, body shops, restoration shops and residential uses.

This single post, 6000 lb portable lift, is designed to operate like a pallet jack, with the ability to lift vehicles to a height of 72″. It’s called a MOBILEMAN® because of it’s mobility around a shop with ease. The versatility of this lift, its ability to be moved quickly and how easy it is to store out of the way makes this a very big seller for Eagle Equipment.

Loading the vehicle is easy when you maneuver the MOBILEMAN® under the side of the vehicle, or simply driving the vehicle over the ramps. This lift uses 4 arms that are adjustable and allow the user to reach each of the vehicles load points. This lift has 12 different locking positions starting at 12” off the ground.

A single post lift is attached to a very beefy pallet jack-style base. It is capable of lifting most cars, with a capacity up to 6000lbs. The MOBILEMAN® is a chain-over-hydraulic system that operates using a 110-volt Eagle power unit and comes with 3 sets of height adapters.

This lift is best suited for auto repair and body repair. The MOBILEMAN® can also be used by the homeowner because of its versatility and the ability to be moved and stored out of the way.

These are all moveable and portable lifts. For more information on the lifts listed above, or maybe a different style of lift, please check out our website – www.eagleequip.com or call us at 1-800-336-2776 to speak with one of our Customer Care Team Members.

. . . . I wish I bought it years earlier!

It makes our day when we get an email like the one below. Seven years later, and we get reminded on how much what we do affects people’s everyday lives. Thanks for the email Pete, we wish you many more years of ‘tinkering’.

Car on car liftJust a note to say: Thanks or such a useful product.

It was the Spring of 2007 when I drove to your business and bought my four-post storage/service lift. So far I have used it to keep my kid’s cars running through their high school and college years. After that, I used it to always have a project car or two around to tinker on.

I now am helping my daughter with some much needed maintenance and repairs to her “new-to-her” car. It’s been great having the lift in the garage available for so many money-saving automotive projects.

Only regret I have is  . . . . I wish I had bought it years earlier!

Thank you,
Pete Owens

Turn Your 3 Car Garage into a 4 Car Garage in No Time (without any construction!)

We love to get nice emails from customers to let us know how happy they were with their Eagle purchase. This morning we got an email from Lynda, who had 5 cars and said that her neighbors were starting to give her “the look”, if you know what I mean! She ordered Eagle’s MS-8000.

Hi Andy,

I wanted to tell you how happy I am with my lift and [the installer you recommended] did a great job installing it. Everyone in the neighborhood knows me now and I am known as Lynda with the lift. Even people I have never met have heard about my lift from my neighbors.

I am so glad I did it.

Lynda

Lift Selection for Load Capacity

The maximum load limit of a lift is one of the primary considerations in the buying process.  Automotive lifts are available in several weight limit ratings from as low as 7,000 pounds up to 18,000 pounds.

When purchasing a non-ETL certified lift it is important to know that the weight limit of the lift is the maximum load based on the strength of the steel in the lift and the stress placed upon the lift.  For this reason, Eagle recommends that the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the vehicle being lifted be no more than 80 to 85% of the maximum lift load.  This allows a safety factor for cargo, fuel, and any other weight impacting factors.  The table below shows recommended maximum GVW for non-ETL certified lifts.

–  7,000 lb. lift                  5,600 to  6,000 GVW
–  8,000 lb. lift                  6,400 to  6,800 GVW
–  9,000 lb. lift                  7,200 to  7,700 GVW
-10,000 lb. lift                  8,000 to  8,500 GVW
-11,000 lb. lift                  8,800 to  9,400 GVW
-12,000 lb. lift                  9,600 to 10,300 GVW
-14,000 lb. lift                11,200 to 12,000 GVW
-15,000 lb. lift                12,000 to 12,800 GVW
-18,000 lb. lift                14,400 to 15,300 GVW

To earn an ETL certification, a lift must be capable of lifting a load above the weight limit of the lift.  Therefore, an ETL certified 10,000 pound lift can safely lift a vehicle with a GVW of 10,000 pounds.  The safety factor for cargo, fuel, etc. has been accounted for by the ETL testing process.

Determine the lift weight rating needed by evaluating the types of vehicles that will be lifted. GVW’s are available over the internet.  One rule of thumb is to over estimate your needs to insure that the lift purchased will do the job.
