Car Lift Maintenance: Check it Every Day

I met a gentleman the other day that was 96 years young! He was surprisingly agile and swift on his feet. He had few wrinkles and looked really good for his age! I was really impressed and thought he wasn’t a day past 70. That got me to thinking about ‘maintenance’.  If I exercise, take care of myself, eat right and stress less…. Will that help me to age just as gracefully?

There are Eagle lifts out there that have been doing their job for decades and still run like the day they were installed. They have aged well, with the right maintenance and care.  Do you know how to maintain your lift so it will run like new for many years? Luckily, it’s easier to know how to help your lift age well…. my wrinkles, not so much!

http://www.autolift.orgLIFTS MUST BE MAINTAINED AND INSPECTED REGULARLY TO ENSURE SAFETY.

Perhaps the most important car lift maintenance is to adjust the cables.  Over time, the cables stretch and if not adjusted, a cable can jump a pulley or cause the lift to rise unevenly.  Each cable should have about .5” of deflection (should not move more than .5”).  This is true for a two-post or four-post lift.  Adjustments are very simple to do and the steps are specific in the manual provided with your lift. Please look that over for instructions on how to adjust your cables. Continue reading Car Lift Maintenance: Check it Every Day

Annual Car Lift Inspections

CAR LIFT INSPECTIONS MUST BE PREFORMED REGULARLY TO ENSURE SAFETY.

https://www.autolift.org/You load up the car lift with a very heavy car, raise it up and then stand under it. It is VITALLY important that you take all the precautions you can to ensure you, and your staff, is safe.

You should get your lift inspected annually by a qualified lift inspector. You can find some qualified inspectors from the lift’s manufacturer or from the Automotive Lift Institutes online database at https://www.autolift.org/find-a-certified-auto-lift-inspector/. They can inspect any style and brand of lift.

What happens during the annual car lift inspection? During the inspection, the inspector is looking to confirm that all of the lift’s components are in place and in working order. Most importantly, that your lift is SAFE. Continue reading Annual Car Lift Inspections

The Styles of Mobile Car Lifts

When it comes to automotive lifts, the one misconception is that all lifts need to be bolted to the floor. That statement is correct for all 2-post lifts and most of the four-post lifts you encounter. There are some mobile car lifts from Eagle that do not have to be fixed to the floor but offer the ability of the end user to lift their vehicles: the PMR-6000-48 mid-rise scissor lift, the MS-8000 series 4-post storage/service lift and the MOBILEMAN® single-post mobile car lift. Let me tell you a bit about each style.

PMR-6000-1PMR-6000-48: MID-RISE SCISSOR LIFT
Primary use – Auto repair shops, body shops and residential use

The Mid-Rise Scissor Lift is a mobile car lift that has been a part of Eagle’s equipment line for nearly 20 years. It is a 6,000 lb. capacity, scissor-style lift, with a 48” rise and can go up to 54″ with the height adapters (that come free). Starting at 12”, there is a locking position every 4 inches. To load, it sits flat on the floor, and you drive the vehicle over the top of the lift. Each arm is adjustable, which allows you to move them to the correct load points for specific vehicles.

The twin hydraulic cylinders and scissor lift design give this lift extreme strength and solid stability. One end of the scissor design has two steel rollers attached to each end of the scissor. These roll during the lifting process, allowing the lift to rise. The steel rollers also work with moving the lift around. The lift comes with a dolly that picks up from one end of the lift, opposite of the steel rollers, and lets you push or pull the lift around your shop or garage. On the opposite side of the scissor, there is a 3″ diameter steel rod that sits still during the lifting process. This steel rod is the anchor that steadies the lift during the lifting process.

When the vehicle is loaded on the lift, most of the vehicle’s underside is not accessible because of the design of the lift. This lift is best suited for tire and brake service, bodywork, and light auto repair.

GLO-8000XLT 2MS-8000 SERIES 4-POST STORAGE & SERVICE LIFT
Primary Use – Residential homeowners, car enthusiasts and automotive repair

By far one of our most popular lifts, mainly sold to the residential and non-commercial market. It can be used in most commercial applications as well.

This lift is a cable-over-hydraulic system and operates with a 110-volt or 220-volt power unit. This lift allows the end user to bolt the lift to the floor if they wish, but is also designed to be free standing.

With two different sizes to choose from, this four-post lift can fit your need:

The MS-8000 is our standard version. It is 168″ long and rises to 72″. It has 10 different locking positions.

GLO-8000The MS-8000XLT is our “extra” version of the same lift. “Extra Long” at 185″ long and “Extra” rise up to 82″.  It also has an “extra” 2 locking positions, for a total of 12.

This lift is offset on the base plates, which allows the plates to each maximize their load and stabilize the lift, without being bolted to the floor. If you need to move the lift and use a little more of your floor space, a caster kit is included with the purchase, allowing you to do this. Simply attach one caster assembly to each post and lower the lift. The weight of the lift will start the caster kit system and pick up each post onto the wheel itself. One person can move the lift once it is securely on the casters. Also included with the purchase are 3 drip trays, 1 jack tray and a set of aluminum drive-on ramps. This is lift is best designed for storing 2 vehicles and/or automotive repair.

Mobileman side shotThe MOBILEMAN® SINGLE POST PORTABLE LIFT
Primary users – Automotive repair shops, body shops, restoration shops and residential uses.

This single post, 6000 lb portable lift, is designed to operate like a pallet jack, with the ability to lift vehicles to a height of 72″. It’s called a MOBILEMAN® because of it’s mobility around a shop with ease. The versatility of this lift, its ability to be moved quickly and how easy it is to store out of the way makes this a very big seller for Eagle Equipment.

Loading the vehicle is easy when you maneuver the MOBILEMAN® under the side of the vehicle, or simply driving the vehicle over the ramps. This lift uses 4 arms that are adjustable and allow the user to reach each of the vehicles load points. This lift has 12 different locking positions starting at 12” off the ground.

A single post lift is attached to a very beefy pallet jack-style base. It is capable of lifting most cars, with a capacity up to 6000lbs. The MOBILEMAN® is a chain-over-hydraulic system that operates using a 110-volt Eagle power unit and comes with 3 sets of height adapters.

This lift is best suited for auto repair and body repair. The MOBILEMAN® can also be used by the homeowner because of its versatility and the ability to be moved and stored out of the way.

These are all moveable and portable lifts. For more information on the lifts listed above, or maybe a different style of lift, please check out our website – www.eagleequip.com or call us at 1-800-336-2776 to speak with one of our Customer Care Team Members.

Outdoor Car Lifts: Can You Do It?

I was driving home from work the other day and saw this as I was stopped at a red light. An Outdoor Car Lift.
lift outdoorsIt made me sign and think of why the most common question I get asked is “Can I install my lift outside?”

People ask this for a number of reasons. They don’t have room in their shop (notice the ceiling height on the above photo), they don’t want to dedicate the space to it or they prefer to work outdoors (this is usually not the case).

Technically, the correct answer is, “You can put it outside (as in, who’s stopping you?), but should you?” Lifts are designed for indoor use, installed in a temperature-controlled environment.  Installing an Eagle lift outdoors automatically voids the warranty because it is a certainty that there will be damages to the lift caused by natural elements.

Alignment Lift? Turn Your Two-Post Lift Into an Alignment Lift!

Do you have a two-post lift but need a four-post lift for the value of being able to do alignments? We have the product you are looking for.

Recently at Eagle Equipment, we have designed and manufactured a new product to change your 2-post lift, into a 4-post service/alignment lift.

The new EAS-4 alignment stands can be added to any Eagle Equipment 9,000lb or 10,000lb 2-post auto lift, or to the PMR-6000-48 midrise lift. These stands will allow the small garage owner to add alignment services to their shop, at minimal cost, without adding a four-post lift.

To use the new Eagle stands, simply raise your vehicle higher than the 36” needed and add the stands under each wheel. Once the stands are in place, lower the vehicle slowly until the car’s weight is supported by the stands. You now have the benefits of having a four-post lift in your shop. All you need to do now is add turn plates to the stands, and you are now ready to do alignments.

  • Max Weight Per Stand = 1,500 lbs
  • Pad height = 36″
  • Pad dimensions = 19.5″ x 19.5″
  • Footprint = 38″ diameter
  • Adjustable leveling feet
  • Each Stand Weighs 100 pounds
  • Powder coated
  • Made of 3/16″ steel

Eagle’s EAS-4 alignment stands are manufactured in their Greensboro, NC plant and can be customized to meet any needs the end user might have. We have a few different packages available.

Car Lift Weights: A 9K lift doesn’t always lift 9,000 pounds

Car Lift Weight Rating and Vehicle Weight

As leading experts in the field of Automotive Lifts, we here at Eagle Equipment feel that one of the most important parts of our job is helping customers make the most informed purchase they can. We often find ourselves as educators; dealing with many assumption of the industry

A common assumption: “If my vehicle weighs 9,000lbs., and I buy a 9K lift; I should be able to lift my vehicle all day long.”

In fact, people often try this with their 1-ton trucks; then wonder why we suggest something more stout.

The thinking may be: “What’s the problem? The lift is rated for 9,000lbs, right?” But, it’s not so simple as that. There are several factors to consider. Car lift weight ratings are a common industry designation. Lifts designated as “9K” are often close approximations to their corresponding kg (kilogram) rating. They may be 8800lbs, or they may be 9200lbs. Further, the 9K may denote the lift’s maximum lifting weight. You may be able to bench-press 350lbs., but this doesn’t mean you can do it all day long!

However, on a more serious note, the greater consideration for car lift weight limits is the weight distribution. Every 2-post lift has four (4) telescoping swing arms for lifting; and these arms actually support the weight of the vehicle. Each arm has its own lifting capacity; for example 9,000 lbs. divided by four is 2,250lbs. per arm.

A 1-ton truck may weigh-in right at 9,000lbs.; but 6,000lbs. of this will be on the rear axle; or 3,000lbs. per arm! Add tool-boxes and such, and you start seeing a real imbalance; this puts a lot of twist on the whole lift. Such a load would be too much for any standard 10,000 lbs. capacity lift, let alone a 9K model.

To safely lift a 1-ton truck, you need to start in the 12,000lbs. capacity range of automotive lifts. And if you’re looking at larger utility vehicles, the range gets even more extreme. The distribution of the weight of any vehicle always needs to be taken into account.

It isn’t that we’re just looking to sell the more expensive product.
It’s what’s best for our customer.

Mobile Lift used as a Truck Bed Remover

The Eagle Mobileman lift has become one of Eagle’s most popular lifts because of how it is used as a mobile lift, making the ways it can be used endless. This convenient lift is portable, runs off a 110 volt, has a max lifting height of 70” and lifts up to 6000lbs.

The normal function of this lift is to raise vehicles for service and repair work. It also works very well when lifting motorcycles, ATV’s, quads and golf carts. But really, because of it’s mobility and lifting capacity, it makes moving anything a breeze. (Seriously, watch how easy it is to move.)  In fact, we have a lumber company that uses their mobile lift to move loads of wood throughout their plant. The possibilities and uses are huge for this type of lift.

Vinnie DiMartino, formerly of American Chopper, has a Mobileman in his NY shop (He loves it!). When we went up to visit him a couple of months ago, he spoke with Andy about the many ideas he had on how he could use his mobile lift. (Watch that here.)

This week, Vinnie sent us as video of how he is using his Mobileman mobile lift in a new and creative way. Take a look at the video below and see how Vinnie has changed this vehicle lift into one of the easiest truck bed removers you will ever see.
VIEW THE NEW VIDEO HERE.

The most successful businesses we work with are those that have the right equipment, and use it to the very fullest to maximize their use out of a single piece of equipment. Vinnie is always customizing, modifying and using his creativity and talent to get the most out of everything he has.

We love seeing how our customers use our equipment! If you have a Mobileman lift, we would love to see it in use. Please send your pictures or videos to andyt@ealeequip.com. Thanks and Enjoy.
