Car Lifts: Staying Safe

The biggest danger of automotive lift operation is improper or inadequate training. Although some automotive lifts may appear to be simple to use, it’s important that owners of lifts take the time to properly train their lift operators thoroughly.

Working with a car lift can be hazardous, particularly if the vehicle falls off the lift, so all safety rules should be followed at all times. Once the lift has elevated the car; the danger of falling debris and objects increase. It is important for lift operators to wear safety glasses to protect their eyes from falling dirt and debris as well as hard hats to protect their heads from accidental bumps or falling car parts that might have loosened during the repair process.

Listed below is a general checklist of do’s and don’ts, to keep you safe, when operating your car lift.

Do’s

  • Ask for training from your employer before you operate the lift for your first time.
  • When you arrive at work, do an inspection of the lift prior to your shift.
  • Make sure the lift’s locking devices engage.
  • Wear safety glasses for work done under the car.
  • Make sure the vehicle is centered and balanced on the lift as described in a service manual.
  • If the lift is of the drive-on type, be sure to use chocks behind the wheels.
  • Check ceiling clearance before raising trucks and RVs.
  • Gently check to see if the car is stable when it is at knee height.
  • Clear the area of tools and bystanders before lowering the lift.

Don’ts

  • Never raise a vehicle that has occupants.
  • Don’t exceed the capacity of the lift.
  • Never stand below a vehicle on a lift that does not have the locking devices engaged.
  • If vehicle support stands are used (such as in the case when an engine or transmission has been removed), do not lower the vehicle onto the support stands because this might push the car off the lift. Instead, bring the supports up to make solid contact with the vehicle once it has reached the proper height.
  • Do not try to repair a faulty lift yourself. Let your supervisor know that the lift needs attention.

At Eagle Equipment we want to make sure our consumers are following automotive lift safety rules. To ensure this our company has taken the time to make a manual to read before installing or operating the lift. Manuals can be accessed on any of our products from their product page online at www.eagleequip.com. We will also be sending a training DVD with the proper use of your lift when you order. The safety of you and your lift operators is very important to us!

How to Pick a Trustworthy Web site

The Internet makes it easier than ever for consumers to browse products, compare pricing and find what they’re looking for right at their fingertips. But it can be hard to tell which sites are from reputable businesses and which ones are very clever scams disguised on nice looking Web sites. How do you know that the company will actually ship you a quality product and offer valuable customer service if needed?

The best way to shop online is through companies that have a history and reputation for their quality products and excellent customer service. Here are a few things to look for:

  • Does the company also have an actual physical location that you can find on their site? An address, some photos and the invitation to visit their location is always a good sign!
  • How long have they been in business? Have they been doing business for a long time? Perhaps they have been doing business since way before the Internet existed or maybe they started a site yesterday.
  • Look at their URL. It has to start with https:// for it to be a safe site. Meaning, you can feel better purchasing online and entering your credit card information.
  • Look for a phone number. If you feel more comfortable placing your order over the phone, make sure the Web site offers a number where you can speak to a customer service representative.
  • Is the price too right? If a site is offering a deal that seems to good to be true, it probably is. All legitimate equipment companies go through the same channels to get their products to their consumers. If one site is able to offer it for substantially lower than the rest, you should ask yourself why.
  • Google it. That’s right. Do a Google search for the company online and see what pops up. Most likely there will customer comments, blogs, social networking and more. This is a good sign.

Free Freight Misconception

The old saying, “There is no such thing as a free lunch”, supports the concept that you cannot get “something for nothing.”  Many online businesses advertise “free freight” so consumers will believe they are getting a great deal.  Merchants are actually just hiding shipping and freight charges by marking up the price of the product.  Shipping and freight providers expect to be paid for their services which include palletizing, packing, loading, transporting, documentation, insurance, and unloading.  These services can account for up to 50% of a product’s cost and it is you, the consumer, who pays for this whether it is added separately or included in the product price.

Eagle Equipment chooses to itemize these charges to be upfront with our customers.  We will do everything we can to offer the best freight pricing without lowering our standards.  Our shipping department makes every effort to ship your car lift or tire equipment in a manner that allows for easy offloading, which includes arranging a carrier and extending the discounts provided to us by our shipping partners.  When possible, a flatbed is used to transport larger automotive repair equipment.

We also take pride in offering “great customer service” which includes accessibility, product knowledge, support, and innovation.  So, when you are shopping for a car lift, wheel balancer, tire changer, or auto repair tools and equipment, make sure you do your research.  Free freight may seem like a bargain at first, but in the end products with free freight may not provide the value anticipated by consumers.
